What Is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda (pronounced eye-yer-vay-dah) is a practice of natural medicine that originated in India over five thousand years ago. Its name comes from the combination of two sanskrit words: ayur (meaning "life") and veda (meaning "knowledge" or "science"). Thus, it is often referenced to as the "science of life" and represents a system of health and wellness that is based on thousands of years of observation, experimentation, and clinical practice regarding how humans beings interact with their natural environment.
Ayurveda understands the individual as a unique expression of a variety of natural qualities. Based on that individual makeup, a person possesses a unique path that will lead him or her to optimal health and wellbeing. When living outside of that path, upset and imbalance in body and/or mind can present itself. By understanding one's unique nature more fully, a person can choose to live in a way that restores or maximizes balance and wellbeing.
